Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam (NL)

Work at the Erasmus Medical Center will be completed in 2017. That means eight years of construction in parallel with ongoing operations at the Medical Department of the Rotterdam Erasmus University. The ward building, training center, Children’s Hospital and Thorax Center will be the main beneficiaries of the construction activity. Upon completion – at a cost of 449 million euros – the complex will cover an area of around 300,000 m². This includes the new 120 m tall office tower – a landmark visible from afar.

Hygiene standards are particularly stringent when operating equipment in buildings used for medical purposes. Only products whose suitability for use in hygienic applications has been validated and whose application has been certified by a neutral body meet such standards.

Wildeboer Bauteile GmbH has arranged for nearly all of its products to be tested by the independent “Hygiene-Institut des Ruhrgebiets” (www.hyg.de), in accordance with various standards and specifications. By issuing certificates, the Institute of Hygiene confirmed that the products manufactured by Wildeboer Bauteile GmbH meet the hygiene requirements. Among other advantages, this guarantees that the growth of microorganisms such as fungi or bacteria will not be supported. In addition, products with a hygiene certificate are resistant to disinfectants. Hence the risk of infection in humans is considerably reduced. Moreover, the cost of cleaning and disinfection also falls.

The type FK90 fire dampers of the FK92 series used at the Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, have been awarded a hygiene certificate. In areas with particularly stringent requirements, the standard version of the fire damper is supplied with an epoxy powder coating. This optional coating ensures an extremely high level of protection against corrosion.

In this building project, maintenance-free FK90 fire dampers of the FK92 series are mainly used in conjunction with installation subframes. These optimise and simplify the installation of the fire dampers, thus saving time and expense. However, the biggest advantage is that the hassle that typically arose at the interface between craftsmen is now a thing of the past.

Installation subframes are available for solid walls and ceilings as well as lightwight partition walls. Installation subframes considerably increase installation options. hence offering unrivalled planning safety. This plays an important role, especially in a long-term construction project such as this in which the plans may still change.
