Handling fire dampers containing asbestos requires specialist knowledge: VDI 6202 Part 3.1 explained in a nutshell

Webinar content

The issue of fire dampers containing asbestos-containing building elements must be given due consideration. Health and safety and hazardous substances legislation applies to both building users and employees of servicing and refurbishment firms. All work requires proof of competence in accordance with TRGS 519.

Fire dampers must be tested for proper function at least once a year. To test their functionality, the damper blade must be triggered; consequently, the release of fibres into the air duct network and the maintenance area cannot be ruled out in the case of fire dampers containing asbestos. For these functional tests, protective measures must be applied as would be required for a complete replacement of the fire dampers containing asbestos.

The VDI 6202 Part 3.1 (03/2026) guideline provides new guidance specifically on fire dampers containing asbestos. It describes the procedures from the identification of asbestos content through to remediation.
